AFTER SETH HAD GONE this morning, Edie’s first challenge had come in the form of a call from Pete Shriver, who said Julia was threatening to cancel the wedding and bolt, with or without Lorenzo. Apparently, another photograph taken by the mysterious Jack Stevens had appeared in the Post, and while Julia hadn’t believed the article—the gist of which was that Lorenzo was seeing another woman—she was saying she couldn’t take the pressure any longer.

Neither could Edie. She’d had it up to her eyeballs. Which was why she’d decided to take matters into her own hands.

“C’mon, Jimmy,” she muttered now, tucking a folded copy of the Post under her arm and sipping a hazelnut latte as she shifted her weight on a metal bench in front of the Puerto Rican Import Company. “I don’t have all day.” In fact, coming here had only increased her annoyance, since Seth would be coming across town again to meet her soon, and she had plenty of better things to do than ream Jimmy Delaney.

She and Seth had planned to leave for the rehearsal dinner in another two hours, and while it would have been wise to bring him along, there hadn’t been time. Besides, Seth had said he needed to do some things around his apartment this morning, so Edie hadn’t even mentioned her plan to him. No doubt, he’d have tried to dissuade her, anyway.

“Hurry up,” she muttered once more. Seth would be back at her shop in an hour, and she’d called a car service to pick them up, but now she had a flash fantasy that she hadn’t really done so, and her heart missed a beat. But no…she distinctly remembered making the arrangements. “You’re driving yourself crazy,” she whispered in self-censure.

She was always overly organized and a bit on the hypervigilant side, but this morning, her mind was whirring out of control. Reading the Post hadn’t helped. Taking it from beneath her arm, she stared at the cover again, shaking her head. Once more, Lorenzo was nearly naked in a locker room and talking to an unidentified blonde. According to Pete Shriver, the woman had simply gotten lost and entered the room by mistake. The headline said Julia Jilted? Apparently, Jack Stevens had been up to his old tricks again.

“Who is this guy?” she fumed, still wondering what she was going to say if she found some way to reach him. And would someone who’d stooped to his level listen to her? Probably not, she decided. Still, she’d feel more confident about tonight if she’d at least made her feelings known. That way, whatever happened, she would have warned Delaney she was ready to play hardball. Jack Stevens, too.

According to Pete, his own research hadn’t rendered any facts about Jack Stevens, but given Jimmy Delaney’s infamy, it stood to reason he’d know everyone in his field. Until moments ago, it hadn’t even occurred to her—and maybe not to Pete—to question Jimmy directly. As it turned out, Pete had known where Jimmy was doing his community service.
